As someone who has spent over 25 years navigating the highs and lows of executive search, I’ve seen firsthand how HR leadership roles – especially at the C-level – can fluctuate with the economy.  When the economy is strong, offers come easily; in tougher times, standing out and capturing the attention of a CEO or board can feel like an uphill battle.

With this in mind, recently, I had the pleasure of hosting Unlocking Your Next CPO Role, an event for HR executives in Melbourne, as part of our TRANSEARCH People & Culture Roundtable Series.

Partnering with leadership expert Sue Barrett from Barrett Consulting Group, our Roundtable provided actionable strategies for People & Culture professionals looking to take on their next role.

Whether you’re preparing to step into a Chief People Officer role or striving to expand your leadership influence, these takeaways will help you get there:

  1. Identify and leverage your unique insights: Sue emphasised the importance of reflecting on what truly matters to you. What are the issues you’re passionate about? What unique insights can you offer that will add value to an organisation? Use your experience as your differentiator, positioning yourself as a strategic advisor and thought leader in the C-suite.
  2. Craft a strong personal brand: Your personal brand is how you communicate your value. Clarity and conciseness are key. Know your strengths and communicate them effectively.
  3. Master your introduction: First impressions are crucial, clearly communicating your value in a way that resonates with others. By framing your expertise around the problems you solve and the outcomes you achieve, you can quickly demonstrate your impact and relevance.
  4. Embrace AI tools: In a technology driven world, leveraging AI tools like ChatGPT can be a game-changer in helping you to refine your communication and enhance your personal brand.
  5. Network with purpose: Building purposeful relationships is critical as you progress your career. Engage in the forums and spaces where decision-makers are networking.
  6. Understanding CEO priorities: HR professionals must deeply understand the challenges and priorities CEOs face. From risk management, to navigating the future of work, or driving commercial success, aligning HR initiatives with strategic objectives is vital.
  7. Adapt and learn continuously: The HR landscape is constantly shifting, and so should you be continuously adapting. Whether it’s new technology, evolving workplace trends, or changing legal frameworks, continuous learning is crucial.
  8. Lead with purpose and passion: Sue’s most compelling advice was lead with purpose. Passion is what sets you apart. What drives you? What impact do you want to make? Knowing your ‘why’ gives you the energy and focus needed to inspire others and steer your organisation toward success.

No matter where you are in your career journey, it’s important to realise that your professional value remains constant. There’s always more ahead of you, so stay focused on your strengths and keep moving forward with confidence. And remember, you’re never alone. Reach out to me if you need further encouragement or even just a listening ear. I’m here to support you every step of the way.
