At senior levels, recruitment is not simply a matter of identifying qualified candidates. It involves managing risk, understanding fit and creating the right conditions for mutual commitment. A strong resume may open a conversation, but it does not determine whether a leader will be successful. The quality of ‘fit’ across culture, performance expectations, leadership requirements, team dynamics and integration will often define success or failure.

John identifies attraction as a foundational element of fit. Without it, the right conversation may never begin. This is important because the most capable leaders are weighing up more than the scope of the role, remuneration package or job title. The credibility of the opportunity, the ambition of the organization, the culture they will be joining and whether they can have meaningful impact – are all key considerations.

Too often, the hiring proposition is framed primarily around what the organization needs: growth, turnaround, transformation… but those priorities only represent one side of the equation. Exceptional leaders also want to know why the opportunity is compelling. Why this organization? Why this role? Why now?
